There is something wrong with the Indian team – it looks totally out of sorts. We knew that the Indians will find it tough against the top sides in the world at the Olympics, but the players are not as bad as they have been made to appear in London. They seem unable to even fight. As a former player and captain of India, it is very embarrassing for us as people keep talking about the poor show. Things were never so bad for us at the Olympics. It’s in total contrast to the otherwise good performance by the contingent in other sports. The team seems totally out of form. It may be the case that they peaked during the Olympic qualifier, and are struggling to reach top gear.We were very impressed with the fitness of the Indian team during the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup a few months ago. But here the players look out of gas, there is no combination or understanding, and the same mistakes are being repeated over and over again. No department is functioning. It also shows the coaching staff in poor light. It explained why we conceded three goals in the last 12 minutes against the Koreans.May be, the expectations were a bit high from the team once they qualified, but they shouldn’t have been. I have maintained that making it to the Olympics was just like crossing a line. At the Olympics, we had to jump over a very high wall.Chief coach Michael Nobbs has come out in public saying that some players in the squad are content with the tag of Olympians and not putting in their best efforts. Though the Australian may have been speaking from the heart, making such comments does not help the confidence of the team at such a juncture. Though we had beaten the Koreans quite a few times in the recent past, they are always a strong side.advertisementIt does not help when our two drag flickers Sandeep Singh and VR Raghunath – are out of form.Against the Koreans, we earned four penalty corners but failed to convert any of them. On the other hand, our opponents capitalised on three out of the five they got.We have one group game left against Belgium, but will finish at the bottom of the pool even if they win.The Belgians will look to capitalise on our misery. The confidence of the Indian team would be shattered but they will have to play for pride and try to do their best.(The writer is a 1980 Moscow Olympics gold medallist)

zoom Geneva-based cruise giant MSC Cruises and French shipbuilder STX France have finalized the contract details for the previously announced two options for Meraviglia-Plus class cruise ships. With all ship specifications now agreed, the companies said that the contract has come into force, with vessel delivery scheduled in October 2019 and July 2020, respectively. The two options were unveiled during a coin ceremony for the MSC Meraviglia, held at the shipyard on February 1, 2016.“I am extremely pleased to see us continuing to deliver against our industrial plan with the coming into force of the final contract for the two “Meraviglia-Plus” ships,” Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, said.He added that, in addition to having built at STX France all twelve of the cruise line’s existing ships, up to eight more are currently planned to be built in France at STX through 2026.The two units are part of MSC Cruises’ EUR 9 billion investment plan for eleven new next-generation cruise ships that will come into service by 2026.The company said that the Meraviglia-Plus ships are a further evolution of the Meraviglia class prototype, increasing their gross tonnage to 177,000 with 2,450 guest cabins.Featuring a length of 331 meters, the new vessels will be able to carry almost 6,300 passengers.
Since the budget was tabled, opposition critics have claimed that the government has “cut” a $2-million rink revitalization program. I’d like to set the record straight. The Rink Revitalization Program was launched as a one-time program for 2008-09. The purpose of the program was to help rinks with maintenance projects. It was not meant to be used as ongoing money for rink operations. Cheques for $27,000 were given to 76 rinks across the province, regardless of need or circumstances. Whether they needed an expensive new roof or had a smaller renovation project planned, they each received the same amount of money. While I understand the rinks put the money to good use, this isn’t the way this government wants to approach funding for recreational facilities. Rather, this government’s approach will be accountable and targeted to facilities in need. The Department of Health Promotion and Protection has three funds designed to help facilities. Community Recreation Capital Grants are available for projects worth up to $20,000. The Recreation Facility Development program offers up to $150,000 in provincial funding for projects with a total value between $20,000 and $450,000. Finally, the Building Facilities and Infrastructure Together (BFIT) program is designed to help with the cost of new or renovation projects worth $450,000 or more. Recreational facilities interested in accessing these funds should do so through the Physical Activity, Sport and Recreation branch of the Department of Health Promotion and Protection. For more information on the grants and how to apply, visit www.gov.ns.ca/hpp/pasr/capital-grants.asp, or contact the local Health Promotion and Protection office. -30-
TORONTO – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada has made great strides in achieving equality for LGBTQ people but there’s still work to be done.Trudeau was greeted with a standing ovation as he took to the stage at a Toronto hotel on Thursday night to accept an award from human rights group Egale Canada for his LGBTQ advocacy. As he reflected on his efforts to make amends for historic wrongs suffered by LGBTQ Canadians, the prime minister affirmed his commitment to remedying present-day discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.“I am on your side,” he told the crowd at the Egale Identity Gala. “I will fight for you, and I will fight with you.”The prime minister mingled with advocates and allies as he found his seat in the rainbow-hued ballroom at the downtown Toronto Hilton.Speakers fondly recounted their interactions with the prime minister at Pride events and private meetings, sometimes censoring their accounts to protect his political sensibilities, and teased him about having looks that appeal to people across the sexuality spectrum.TD Bank CEO Bharat Masrani described Trudeau as “the very definition of what it means to be an ally” as he presented him with Egale’s inaugural leadership award honouring his contributions towards advancing rights for LGBTQ people in Canada. In his speech, Trudeau recalled his apology last November to public servants and members of the military who had their careers sidelined or ended due to their sexual orientation between the 1950s and early 1990s.He said he pulled his kids out of school that day so they could to share in what he described as one of the most poignant moments of his political career, just as he watched his father, Pierre Trudeau, patriate the Constitution alongside the Queen in 1982.“Ella and Xav watched their dad stand on the floor of the House of Commons, surrounded by colleagues, and promise that we as a nation will do better,” he said.“It was an incredible day that I will never forget, and I certainly don’t think they will either. And I am deeply privileged to be a part of this larger moment.”Trudeau pointed out some of the areas where progress still needs to be made, such as the prevalence of homelessness among queer youth and the disproportionate violence suffered by the trans community. He also expressed disappointment with the persistence of what he described as discriminatory restrictions preventing sexually active gay men from becoming blood and organ donors.“Yes, we’re working on it, but I’m upset too that it’s not there yet,” he said, waving his hand as if to assure the crowd.“Our entire government is committed to full equality for the queer community. You have my word on that.”

“Clearly, the sheer impact of the quake is still emerging,” Mr. Annan said of the event which is so far estimated to have killed some 80,000 people, injured over 100,000 and left up to 3 million homeless. “But one thing we do know already: we must be prepared to work together in the long run,” he said. “The people and Government of Pakistan will need the enduring support of the international community.” Mr. Annan, who personally witnessed the suffering of the victims in quake-hit areas yesterday, paid tribute to the valiant relief and recovery work taking place. He also thanked the donors who have already stepped forward, the international organizations that are providing support and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), both local and international, whom he called “heroic.” The greatest challenge now, he said, was to work on three levels at once – relief, or saving lives, early recovery, or restoring livelihoods, and reconstruction, or rebuilding economies. “Each level requires our sustained commitment,” he stressed. “Each requires us to come up with innovative solutions. Each requires cash matched by coordination.” “The pitiless Himalayan winter is already upon us,” he continued, emphasizing that emergency relief must continue unabated. However, at the same time, the conditions must be put in place to make sure “temporary solutions do not become a permanent makeshift reality.” For that reason, he said, a reconstruction phase must be planned that improves on what was there before. “This, in short, is where we can and must turn a challenge of inhuman dimensions into an opportunity for human development.” “I hope I can count on all of you as we pursue that mission in the weeks, months and years ahead,” he told assembled donors. After touring the quake-hit areas on Friday, Mr. Annan told reporters that the devastation was “unimaginable; one had to see it to understand what has happened.”Asked about relations between India and Pakistan following the disaster, he said their governments “have reacted in a positive and responsible manner,” and noted that points along the Line of Control had been opened. “Whatever we can do to facilitate relief and passage across the line to be able to assist those in need should be done and I am encouraged by what the leaders have done so far.” The Secretary-General also voiced hope that the new initiatives “will be seen as confidence building measures that can be built on and help improve the climate for discussions that are going on.”
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Cypriot President Demetris Christofias arrived in Australia on Wednesday morning, flying straight to Canberra, to attend a luncheon at Australian Parliament House in Canberra, hosted by prime minister Julia Gillard. Member for Hindmarsh Steve Georganas and Member for Calwell Maria Vamvakinou were also in attendance. Christofias, who is accompanied on his Australian tour by First Lady Elsi, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou and government officials, was officially welcomed at the Canberra airport by Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce. During his meeting with Australian prime minister Julia Gillard the two leaders agreed Australia and Cyprus share similar values and close personal links.Gillard acknowledged the important contribution the vibrant Cypriot community has made to the diversity of Australian life; Cypriot-born migrants and their families in Australia make up a community of over 80,000, the second largest Cypriot community outside Cyprus. The president and prime minister agreed to continue to facilitate and encourage reciprocal visits and to explore further cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They noted strong cultural and educational links between Australia and Cyprus. Cooperation was particularly strong in the area of antiquities and archaeology, with Australian archaeologists working on the island of Cyprus since the 1930s. President Christofias expressed his sympathy for the victims of recent disasters in Australia, including Cyclone Yasi, flooding in the eastern states, and bushfires in Western Australia. The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has made a donation towards the restoration of the Cyprus community building in Brisbane. The Cypriot President visited the Australian War Memorial where he lay a wreath, at the National Museum, and the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. On Thursday he travelled to Adelaide for a meeting with South Australian premier Mike Rann and also attended a lunch with Governor of South Australia Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce. Christofias visited the Cypriot community of South Australia, in Adelaide, where he lay the foundation for the community’s new cultural centre. He praised the Cypriot community for honouring the country they live in and being active members of the Australian community. He also commended Rann’s stance on the Cyprus issue, and its fight for independence. Speaking in Adelaide Mr Christofias said Cyprus will only see a better day if it is unified on the basis of a two-zone two communities confederation. “Turkish Cypriots are not our enemies they are our brothers,” he said. “They are Cypriots like us.”“Turkish Cypriots have the same culture and same traditions as Greek Cypriots”, Christofias said. “The ‘wall’ of Lefkosia will fall sooner or later. As long as we have friends like the Australians and especially brothers like Mike Rann I’m sure we’re going to break the ‘wall’ of division and will reunite our country and our people,” he said. “My main aim for running as president was to reunite our country, to end the occupation that violates international law, the principles set by the UN in human rights and any notion of justice”. Premier Mike Rann said that while Australia and Cyprus are far apart geographically they continue to enjoy a close relationship. Rann commended Christofias for his dedication to resolving the Cyprus issue. Christofias also announced that in less than a year Cypriot community members in Australia will have free access to channel RIK. On Friday, Christofias was in Melbourne for meetings with Premier of Victoria Ted Baillieu and Victoria’s Governor Alex Chernov. The president also met with the Cypriot community of Melbourne. Baillieu welcomed Christofias to “multicultural Melbourne”, thanked him for visiting and expressed his own desires to visit Cyprus in the future. President Christofias thanked Baillieu, and acknowledged that Cypriots living in Melbourne embrace multiculturalism, something he believes is lacking in Cyprus. He described the Cypriots behaviour as chauvinistic and said it was suicidal for the country’s future. Concluding his speech during a luncheon held from the State Government, Mr Christofias extended an open invitation to the premier to visit Cyprus.
A grande société, grande ambition.
A solar flare. Image: NASA More information: Superflares on solar-type stars, Nature (2012) doi:10.1038/nature11063Solar flares are caused by the sudden release of magnetic energy stored near sunspots. They release 1029 to 1032 ergs of energy on a timescale of hours. Similar flares have been observed on many stars, with larger ‘superflares’ seen on a variety of stars, some of which are rapidly rotating4, 5 and some of which are of ordinary solar type. The small number of superflares observed on solar-type stars has hitherto precluded a detailed study of them. Here we report observations of 365 superflares, including some from slowly rotating solar-type stars, from about 83,000 stars observed over 120 days. Quasi-periodic brightness modulations observed in the solar-type stars suggest that they have much larger starspots than does the Sun. The maximum energy of the flare is not correlated with the stellar rotation period, but the data suggest that superflares occur more frequently on rapidly rotating stars. It has been proposed that hot Jupiters may be important in the generation of superflares on solar-type stars, but none have been discovered around the stars that we have studied, indicating that hot Jupiters associated with superflares are rare. Citation: Kepler satellite telescope reveals hundreds of superflares on distant stars (2012, May 17) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-05-kepler-satellite-telescope-reveals-hundreds.html Scientists have known about superflares for some time, though little is actually known about them. Nonetheless, over the past several years a near consensus had been reached regarding the reasons for their occurrence. Most in the field agreed that they were caused by interactions with what are known as “hot Jupiters,” huge planets in close proximity to the star. This new study undermines that theory; out of 365 superflares spotted occurring with 148 stars, not one of them had a hot Jupiter nearby. Because of this, astrophysicists are once again in the dark and must now go back and rethink the possibilities. Some have already suggested that instead of a hot Jupiter, perhaps there is a hot Earth situation occurring, i.e. a more distant cooler planet interacting with the star. Unfortunately, such an interaction would be far more difficult to observe because such planets wouldn’t change the amount of light observed by Kepler as would hot Jupiters when they pass between our planet and their star. The team also found that superflares occur more often with faster spinning stars; of the 365 superflares observed, only 101 occurred with slow rotating stars. They also found that stars that gave rise to superflares almost always had large sunspots as well. For these reasons, and because there is no evidence of such a large flare over the past 2000 years, the team doesn’t believe our own sun is capable of producing such large flares, which is good, because just one blast would destroy our ozone layer, making our planet uninhabitable in short order.Scientists believe that flares from our sun come about when magnetic field lines that are connected to magnetically active parts on the sun, which we observe as sun spots, snap like a cut wire, sending electrically charged particles into space. Unfortunately, the same model doesn’t appear to hold for superflares because of the differences in scale. Thus, more research will need to be done to see if other models or theories can be built to help better explain this mysterious phenomenon. (Phys.org) — Here on Earth we are occasionally concerned about solar flares due to the impact they can have on our electrical systems. But our solar flares are puny when compared to so-called superflares that occur with other stars. A new research study by a team from Japan’s Kyoto University has found after studying one patch of sky over a 120 day period in 1990 using data from the Kepler telescope, that superflares are rather common, and as they describe in their paper published in the journal Nature, some are a billion times as powerful as those that occur with our own sun. © 2012 Phys.Org

Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour unveiledAccorHotels launches Sydney’s first new build luxury hotel since OlympicsSofitel Sydney Darling Harbour was officially launched on 3 October 2017 by The Hon. Adam Marshall MP, Minister for Tourism and Major Events making it the first new build, international luxury hotel to debut in Sydney’s CBD this millennium. It is also the first new Sofitel property to be built in Australia. The launch of the Sofitel has broken a 5-star accommodation drought that stretches back before the Sydney Olympics, with the last internationally-branded luxury hotel opened in 1999.The opening of the Sofitel heralds a renaissance of new hotel development in Sydney, with over 40 hotels scheduled to open over the next five years to support the city’s record breaking tourism growth. For such an auspicious launch, the hotel’s owner, Dr Jerry Schwartz, and Chief Operating Officer of AccorHotels Pacific, Simon McGrath decided to offer the whole hotel to 33 charities to support in their fundraising. As a result, $508,000 was raised by the charities supporting a range of causes including medical research, disadvantaged children and families, education, Indigenous development and homelessness.“Being the most important hotel opening since the Olympics, we wanted to once again involve the whole of Sydney by supporting charities that do so much for communities across the city and the State,” said Dr Schwartz.“This hotel launch will also help cement Darling Harbour as one of the world’s most dynamic tourism and events precincts, and power future international and domestic demand for the city.”Simon McGrath said, “Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour will be a landmark hotel for Sydney and with its proximity to the International Convention Centre, the hotel will help bring major conferences and events to the city and will be a significant contributor to the tourism sector.“Sofitel is now the largest luxury hotel brand in the Pacific and coupled with the strength of AccorHotels’ distribution and loyalty platform we are confident Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is going to lead the luxury hotel market in Australia.”The Hon. DALLAS, Flexjet, the fractional business jet ownership program of Bombardier, is rolling out an innovative incentive program for owners making quick turnaround trips. The Round Trip Pricing program, launching on February 3, 2009, reduces the cost of one- or two-day round trips for owners committed to at least 100 flight hours per year. The program, the first of its kind in the fractional jet ownership market, comes in response to feedback from owners looking for more cost-effective, short-haul travel. The program is expected to be a permanent part of Flexjet’s pricing structure.“We expect this not to be a limited time offer,” said Sylvain Levesque, Vice-President, Marketing, Flexjet. “It is a demonstration of our continued commitment to provide value and an ownership experience that is unmatched in the industry.” The new program rewards the increased operational efficiency gained when a fractional owner books both legs of a round trip in advance. Efficiencies are gained through the ability to maximize active flight and crew time. Flexjet owners will see savings applied to both their hourly rate and Fuel Component Adjustment fees. The result is a 15 percent price reduction for each hour of a qualifying round trip and can save owners thousands of dollars for each flight flown. Any owner with two shares or more in the fractional program–equivalent to 100 hours or more per year–qualifies for the program. The reduced rate is available under two scenarios–the Day Trip or the Overnight Trip–both of which need to be booked in advance. The Day Trip includes a round-trip of no more than 12 hours from start to finish on the same calendar day. The Overnight Trip consists of one night away with a layover of 12 to 20 hours. The program gives Flexjet owners an incentive to plan ahead. Not only will the owners enjoy reduced hourly rates, but it makes travel in a Flexjet aircraft, as opposed to a charter, much more cost-effective. Flexjet.com/roundtrip
